Fireworks Extravaganza!

Just have to say that I saw a wonderful fireworks show last night. At Coors Field, after a Rockies game. The game itself was boring as hell, and of course it had to go into extra innings because the stadium was full and the Rockies had to milk it for all it was worth. They never have sell-out crowds, except for on the 4th of July.

But the people watching was awesome. The food consumption at baseball games is unbelievable. And I have a hunch that a lot of the people who chose to consume obscene amounts of food at the game probably would do the same if they were sitting on their couches at home. It's sad, actually. And does anyone sit for more than 10 minutes at a time? (Granted, the game was boring - see above - some people deal with boredom by walking around. Others by consuming obscene amounts of fattening food. And still others by doing both.)

In any case, by the time the fireworks started it was after 11:00 PM. Most of the kids sitting nearby were asleep and some weren't even roused by the noise, smoke, ash, and debris caused by such an extravaganza. Some families left halfway through the show because their kids were scared, bothered by the noise, tired, asleep, or some combination of those. Which was shocking to me, because the game started at 6:00. You know you came for the fireworks. You sat around for over 5 hours (if you arrived before the first pitch) WAITING for the fireworks to start. You paid way too much for the tickets because the 4th of July game is one of the most expensive games in the season (because it's always a sell-out crowd). I just don't get it.

Anyways, the fireworks show. Even though we were in the nosebleed seats and couldn't see the game very well (well, we could - but the angle we had did not allow us to judge the pitches and thus argue with the umps.) - the seats were awesome for fireworks viewing. It was as if they were right in front of us - just above the stadium. Cheesy music, but a great smoky, noisy, ashy show. I'd do it again, even with the crowd I had to face as we left the stadium. Usually I avoid events like that because I hate to be in the middle of a crowd I can't escape from.

So Happy 5th of July everyone.
