...standing on the top of a ledge. There is about a 10 foot vertical drop, and you have no choice but to take it. After the drop, there is no place to go but down and the slope is so steep that stopping or even slowing down is not an option. It feels as though you're about to jump into an empty swimming pool, only the bottom is about 500 ft down (or more).
Oh, and you're wearing skis.
That was me this afternoon, at the top of the back bowls of A-Basin. I've heard of cornices, but never seen them. And holy cow, I spent about 10 minutes psyching myself out before I finally went for it. And I think I only dropped in because it was so windy I was freezing my ass off! It might be the most intense skiing experience I've ever had.
The boy has some video footage of me trying to pick myself up after a nice fall, but on a different trail. One of my skis was uphill from me, but I couldn't get to it because the slope was too steep and slippery to climb. I finally lurched myself up and knocked the ski with my pole. He started the video after that, when I was trying to figure out how to put my skis back on with the challenge of such steep grade. The video ends when I glare at him and ski away, disappearing into the trees. Maybe I'll even post it on YouTube for all to see!
Fantastic.
I applied to six different jobs today. Phone calls start tomorrow, interviews start Tuesday.
Wish me luck!
