So two months ago I introduced my students to a contest. Mo Willems, who is in my opinion writes the most wonderfully engaging books ever, released a new book today about the pigeon. (www.pigeonpresents.com/) Sorry, couldn't put in an embedded link; Blogger is nuts tonight. The pigeon has starred in several books, and he has quite a personality. He likes big trucks, staying up late, and hot dogs... and he is very persuasive.
So we knew the title of the new book was "The Pigeon Wants a ... [something]" and the contest was to guess what. You had to be between 4 and 11 years of age to enter. We entered the contest back in January, just for fun - and I never mentioned it again. Well today, they arrived at school fresh off Spring Break and the burning questions were... WHAT DOES THE PIGEON WANT???? WHO WON THE CONTEST??? I have to add that Mo Willems is giving away the best prize in the world: a school visit, and signed copies of each of his books for the winning child.
So after school I went to local children's bookstore... and they told me that all their copies of the new book were already reserved?! Couldn't have this. I told the lady she was coming to school with me tomorrow if I couldn't get my hands on a copy of the book. Holy cow they would have my head! (She gave in, of course. None of those schmucks were showing up; it was 10 mintues before closing time!)
It's fun to discover what little things get kids so excited... I can't wait to torture them with the book tomorrow.
